Star Wars: The Old Republic - Gamer Interview
November 22, 2008 [Stream] With more news and information about Lucas Arts' new MMO game Star Wars: The Old Republic hitting the internet everyday, StarWarsMMO.net's Inyri has gained an exclusive interview with game players from World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic & Star Wars: Galaxies to see what their views are on The Old Republic. Question: Are you excited about The Old Republic? Why? SW: Galaxies - Pretty excited, yeah. I’m an avid Star Wars fan, so naturally I’m excited about a new game based in the SW universe. The ability to interact with other people in experiencing the game has me pretty stoked as well. I know that most people in my SWG guild are excited about it as well, so we’ll definitely be giving it a whirl when it comes out. WoW - Well, its a Star Wars game. I get excited by all of them. Guild Wars - My enthusiasm for the game is somewhat tempered right now, being as we don’t know a lot about it. The promise of an MMO set in the Star Wars universe has always been an exciting one, but hasn’t really worked when implemented. I’m hoping that they can make it work without degenerating into mediocrity. KoTOR - Yes, because it is the one Star Wars game that can be totally independent of any other Star Wars storylines because it takes place before the Star Wars trilogies. Question: What kinds of non-Force classes would you like to see implemented into the final game? SW: Galaxies - Bounty hunters, definitely. I have many fond memories of jetting around as a bounty hunter with my guild. Smugglers, medics, traders too, I suppose. WoW - I think that the old Galaxies model worked well. That game had a variety of non-Force classes that a player could pursue. I think that the melee classes in Galaxies were somewhat forced though, almost only there to balance the ranged classes. I think that if the TOR developers can get a handle on the dynamics and balance of Jedi vs non-Jedi they’ll have some great gameplay classwise. I’d also love to see some good crafting implemented as a classish system. Too many games sideline crafting or make it trivial. Guild Wars - Smugglers, of course being a staple of the SW universe. Probably some military as well, soldiers, pilots, those sort. Oh and Wookiees. Big ol’ Wookiee warriors. KoTOR - Scoundrel, Soldier, Scout, and Trader (Spacer/Smuggler). Question: How do you expect payment to be handled for The Old Republic and will it be a factor in your decision to buy/play the game? SW: Galaxies - Money really isn’t an issue. I’ll pay whatever the monthly fee is as long as I get a good game in return. WoW - In this market the standard ~$15 a month is what I would expect. And no, payment would not be a factor in my playing it. Guild Wars - Being that Guild Wars is free, I would love for TOR to be free as well. I’m not going to delude myself into thinking that it will be though, so I’m prepared for it. I’d be okay with a monthly fee of $10-15, but anything more than that would be too much. And it goes without saying that the gameplay and story will have to attract me enough to keep paying for the game. KoTOR - Credit card or PayPal. And, yes, anymore than $15/month and I wouldn’t be interested. Question: If you were going to play The Old Republic, would you play as a Force class (Jedi/Sith) or a non-Force class? Why? SW: Galaxies - I like non-Force classes usually. Flashy lightsabering does get old after a while. That being said, BioWare may just implement a system that makes Jedi a lot of fun, so I might end up playing that more. And at least this time around, it’s somewhat acceptable for bunches of Jedi to be milling about, as opposed to the setting of Galaxies. WoW - I think I would certainly try out Jedi. But I’ve played Jedi in KOTOR, Jedi Knight, and countless other Star Wars games. Playing something other than Jedi would be fun too, assuming class balance isn’t an issue. Guild Wars - I would likely try both, to see which one I liked better as well as to have some versatility in my gameplay options. KoTOR - Probably Jedi/Sith to start off with to get a better feel for the game. Then non-Force later after I know what to expect. The full interview can be found here. We would like to thank the staff of StarWarsMMO.net for letting us post this excerpt from the interview.
